A Seasonal Planting Calendar for Young Trees in New Jersey

New Jersey offers more than one good planting window. The right moment depends on stock type, weather, soil moisture and whether you can support the tree after planting.

Late winter to early spring

This is the main window for bare-root stock: plant while trees are dormant and before warm, windy conditions dry exposed roots. Deep plugs and containers can also go in once soil is workable—not frozen, saturated or smeared by digging.

Late spring and summer

Container stock can be planted, but heat raises the cost of establishment. Plant promptly, water deeply and monitor sandy sites closely. Postpone planting during extreme heat if you cannot provide reliable aftercare.

Early to mid-fall

Cooler air, warm soil and lower weed pressure can make fall excellent for many trees and shrubs. Plant early enough for roots to settle before the ground freezes. Avoid putting marginally hardy or poorly drained plants into a risky late-season situation.

Winter

Use the dormant season to map the site, control invasive plants, install protection and reserve stock. Plant only when species, stock type and soil conditions allow it.

Rules that apply all year

  • Keep roots moist before planting.
  • Set the root collar at grade.
  • Water the original root zone and surrounding soil.
  • Protect from deer, rodents and equipment.
  • Check moisture below the mulch instead of guessing from the surface.
